The last few classes, we have looked at theatre traditions of times past – Ancient greece, Renaissance Europe, etc. The plays and performances of those variouse time periods reflect the values and aesthetics of the culture that produced them – they are a product of that particular society at that particular time.
For this journal assignment, consider the production of Clybourne Park that you attended. How does this pay, and hthis particular production, reflect the values/aesthetics of our current society? Think aobut both the play itself and the production style used. Your response should be 3-5 paragraphs minimum and address each of the following :
1 – identify one theme or idea from the play. Then, desciribe it’s connection to present-day society (what value or issue is being presented, and what does that have to do with your life today?)
2 – Identify one aspect of the production or theatrical convention that reflects our present-day society ( what is the acting style? the set or costume design style). Then, compare or contrast that with the traditions of a different time period we have studied in class. How are they different? How are they the same?
3 – Why do you think the Theatre Department chose this play?

French Theatre Traditions – 17th Century

Chinese Theatre traditions – Peking Opera
Peking opera is a performance art incorporating sining, reciting, acting, martial arts. Although widely practised throughout China, its performance centres on beiking. Tianjin and Shanghai. Peking opera is sung and recited using primarily Beijing dalect, and its liberttos are composed according to a strick set of rules that prize form and rhyme. They tell stories of history, politics, societty and daily life and aspire to inform as they enterian. The music of Peking opera plays a key role in setting the pace of the show, crating a particular atmosphere, shaping the characters and guidign the progress of the stories. Civilian plays emphsize string and wind instruments such as the thin, gih-pitched jinghu and the flute dizi while military plays feature percussion instruments like the bangu or daluo. performance is characterized by a formulaic and symbolic style with actors and actressses following established choreography for movements of hadns, eyes, torsos, and feet. Traditionally, stage settings and props are kept to a minimum. Costumes are flamboyant and the exaggerated facial makeup uses concise sysbols, colours and patterns to portray charcters’ personalities and social identities. Peking opera is transmitted largely through master-studnet training with trainees learing basic skills through oral instuction, observation and imitation. It is regarded as an expression of the esthetic ideal of ppra in traditional Chinese society and remains a widely recognized element of the country’s cultureal heritage
